Lancaster Weather

A Year Ago, This Week

Saturday 19 July 2003

Saturday - changed the oil in a couple of vehicles, cleaned up the garage a bit, napped to the Dodgers getting pasted by St. Louis. Tried to watch the channel 5 bad-sci-fi line up, but I just wasn't up to it.

The humidity continues - the house started to feel like I was living in a swamp, so on came the central air.

In the evening I went over with some friends to the local 'A' ballpark - the Lancaster Jethawks.  The good guys won and it was a lovely evening to be out at a game.

Five Good Things that happened this week:
  1. Free Catfood
  2. Free Ball Game Tickets
  3. PVM template working
  4. Oil leaks in Probe Subsiding
  5. New Sails ordered, delivery soon.

Friday 18 July 2003

Friday -  I forgot to bring home the sandstorm video, but here's a shot of the Cayucos 4th of July parade..

Thursday 17 July 2003

Thursday - it's still hot. Forensic test cases continue, right now it looks as though one version of the code is working, and one, which should be functionally identical on a different platform, is not. Hmmmm.

I have a little video of the dust storm someone sent me, maybe I'll post it here...

I need to clean the inside of the car still.

Wednesday 16 July 2003

Wednesday - actually the dust storm was today, Wednesday. I have no idea of what happened to Tuesday. Hopefully I'll get paid anyway...

Tuesday 15 July 2003

Tuesday - the temperature was 108. Then there was a dust storm with about 10 feet visibility. Then it rained. Now at about seven in the evening it is still 95 and humid. Yuck.

I have to go now, and wash the mud off my car.

Monday 14 July 2003

Monday - got to work at bit late, as there were some errands to attend to. One was cat food - Phoebe's special, expensive, cat food. I bought a couple bags, or tried to - they wouldn't take my money! Said that I had bought enough, and that the manufacturer let them give some away to deserving pets. Call me paranoid, now I'm waiting for the bad news.

Work went well enough. The power stayed up over the weekend, so our jobs didn't die. Worked on the PVM stuff a bit - I was trying to use the one code model, with spawns and TIDS being used to differentiate between two (or more)processes, but the code gets a bit overly convoluted. Instead I think I'll just go with a master-slave type arrangement, where the slaves are different, but simpler, bits of code.

The "heat index" in Palm Springs was 146 degrees today.  I imagine the golf courses weren't too busy...

Sunday 13 July  2003

Sunday - hot again. I had all sorts of well intentioned plans involving cars - changing oil, rotation tires, smogging, washing and so on. None of it happened, just too darned hot.

Went to lunch at the Blue Koi again, and thence to the Barnes & Noble and the Sports Chalet nearby. I saw some neat stuff in the bookstore, Wolfram's book - he is probably a nut (but an interesting one), and Pinker's books, but I already have a couple of months backlog at my current reading pace (snail like, alas). I am sort of lusting after a kayak for some reason, and there were some of the tough sit-on-top plastic ones being sold at the sports shop. However, it turns out that you can rent them for $40 minimum, and $15 a day after that, and they don't charge for the rental and return days. So, 3 days for $40... Hmmmm....

I was supposed to go over to an evening pool party, but was involved in something and missed it. Too bad - it's perfect weather for one.

Photo Notes: Here is a complement to last week's picture, from the beach, looking  out at the pacific ocean, and a distant fog bank... The picture from a year ago this week was also ocean related, San Diego as seen from a deadly Russian submarine!
