A Year Ago, This Week

Saturday 20 September 2003

Saturday - on travel. Soaking up the sun, visiting and partying with friends...

Friday 19 September 2003

Friday - hand therapy and messing about with vehicle registration took up the morning. Rather than making the company pay for a partial day I just took the rest of it off as well, and headed off early ( 1:00 pm ) down to beautiful San Diego where a friend is having his child christened this coming Saturday.

Thursday 18 September 2003

Thursday - barbecue. It went well.

Wednesday 17 September 2003

Wednesday - worked late, got the parallel processing going. Pretty cool, really. I'll post a plot of the speedup here soon.

I've organized a little barbecue here tomorrow, and am out of town over the weekend, so light posting for a while...

Tuesday 16 September 2003

Tuesday - trying to patch the Linux box at work. Problem is, I can't use the most recent version, and the older versions have upwards of 200 patches! Too much to do by hand. And the firewall keeps the "up2date" utility from working... Arrgghhh. Nothing can be easy. And the 'end of life' for these versions is December anyway.

Also took the Ford Probe into the shop, had some work done. It also needs work on the exhaust system, so I'll have to take it into a muffler shop for that. It's all original with  ~260K miles, and it's due. Overall the car is in pretty good shape. It needs a wash, as do the rest of my vehicles.

I see that a year ago I was having hand surgery. I've more scheduled in a few weeks this year, but I'm beginning to wonder if they just intend to keep cutting until something works or there is nothing left to cut. Trying to contact another 'specialist' whose office doesn't seem to pick up the phone.

Monday 15 September 2003

Monday - reinstalled a balky antivirus product at work, for about the third time. Apparently the old version, despite being removed, left parts of itself behind in the registry and elsewhere, and fouled up the new version. So, the new version also had to be uninstalled, and a search and destroy mission launched for all antivirus definitions, files, and folders, and the registry cleaned out ( RegClean, which Microsoft sort of hides these days). Then the new version was installed again. And, it seems to have worked this time.

And worked a little with the parallel processing: PVMFEXIT() and PVMFKILL() do very different things it turns out. But the coding is progressing...

Helped a friend's kid with geometry homework. As it's been decades for me, I'm a  little rusty. I also recommended flash cards for memorizing the various definitions, theorems, lemma's, corollary's and postulate's. So far there are only seven theorems and some definitions to know, but that'll change :-)

Sunday 14 August  2003

Sunday -  did a lot of painting. Started on some of the tan siding, as well as the turquoise trim, and not a small amount of caulking around the various windows and trim areas. This was with a lot of help from a friend and her daughter, so things progressed very nicely...

It was a learning experience for the young 'un - she learned what a "holiday" is, how to keep paint from running down a brush, how to keep paint from filling up the groove on the paint can, and that the Thompson Twins now raise sheep in New Zealand.

I have to say that this is all taking a lot longer than I estimated.

Photo Notes: The Japanese-American Festival of a few weeks ago also had a large art exhibit. Here a some butterflies resting on a leaf - all in pottery!
