Saturday 20 September 2014
Saturday - OTR. Off to the desert!

Friday 19 September 2014
Friday - Hot, but not massively so. Cleaning up around the house, gathering up gear for camping. I can't find a lot of stuff, including my hydration pack and my tent. I was able to borrow a tent from kirk - it must be massive from the weight. I have a ride but I'm not sure how much space they'll have for me and my gear.

Light posting, obviously.

The cats and turtle will have to live without me for a day....

Why yes, that is indeed my cat climbing up the french door windows...

Thursday 18 September 2014

Thursday - Hot again. Worked a bit on the app, but got sidetracked by some other stuff, so...

It looks like I'm up for car camping this weekend. For a while it was verging on cancellation, but now it's on again. I took the class on dealing with youths from the Scouts, so I'm all set. Apparently it's going to be a fairly small group, just a few boys, up at Red Rock Canyon.

Wednesday - Hot again. Not much to say.

Tuesday 16 September 2014
Tuesday - Another very hot day. Two swamp coolers, with an assist from the mechanical unit at times. Early evening I felt chilled, turned off the mechanical and one swamp cooler, then put on a t-shirt and checked the inside house temperature: 78F. Heh.

Worked on the app more, got the work surface acting the way I want, with drag able cards and tiles. Now to add prompts (graphic, text, audio), then create the Settings page. S says she's redoing the artwork, my stuff is just placeholders.

I also got a call from an old client, with questions about some work we'd done for their database. I knew much of it, but had to ping Tim for the rest. He, fortunately, had copies of the various final reports to comb through. We don't actually have a contract with them any more, but it's an hour or two, and maybe bread upon the water...

I don't think I've mentioned the turtle. He's doing fine. In fact, great. I built him a little platform, to haul himself out of the water. He loves it, and spends most of his time on it. In his old tank he really couldn't get completely out of the water, and it's clearly something he craved. In fact, after I assembled just the frame of PVC and set it in the tank to size it he climbed upon the slippery round plastic pipe and balanced there - quite a feat for a turtle!

The platform was a little trickier than I thought. Originally it was just a piece of pine across, but he had trouble getting out of the water. So I added a 'step', another piece of pine that was actually under the water and allowed him to crawl out and up, like steps. He still had trouble, with his body swinging under the step, so I ended up adding a downwards lip, so that he can lever his hard shell up without swing under.

Now he just sits on a plank, basking under the glow of a fairly dim fluorescent light. I believe they like a heat lamp and a UV lamp, and I've pinged S on finding them amongst their yard sale treasure. Sunlight would be even better, but I don't really have a second tank setup. I guess I could gen something up out of a plastic storage container and a small tank and some gravel though.

turtle and new-to-him platform
Not much clearance. Turtles are dirty creatures, so I like lots of water.
I may just create a new top, but I've only got him for a few more days, so...

Monday 15 September 2014
Monday - Class in the morning. The instructor showed up late, with a perfunctory excuse about "being at the doctors". Since when do doctors have hours before 8:15am? And why didn't he call in? "My phone battery was dead". Sheesh. I was going to refer to his attitude as "phoning it in", but....

But we had an actual lecture, and introduction to the computer media lab next door, and some homework assignments - 5 of them it turns out. Since this is week #4 that's about right...

I should say: we're down to about 1/3rd the original number of students. Apparently you only have to stay so long, and then you can keep the free state money. I don't get why you get to keep any if you don't finish with a passing grade?

Various bits of work on things in the afternoon. App stuff, but also some other stuff, bills and such. I stuck my self-employment taxes in the mail. Sigh.

Very hot out, but reasonable though not amazing humidity. We are seeing some afternoon development of clouds, and a push in from the east, but it barely makes it to Lancaster before sunset, then it fades to clear(ish).

I say clear-ish, because there is so much light pollution now that even a little haze is enough to reflect and block the stars.

Sunday 14 September  2014
Sunday - Brutally hot. It felt like one of the hottest days of the year, despite registering only about 105F.

I didn't feel well, but I decided to do an 'easy' chore, replacing the water line to the swamp coolers. It had a leak, and needed replacing. I decided to put it inside a 1/2" pvc pipe, so that I can mow and edge with less worry. I also replaced the "T" fitting, putting it down at the end of the line at the swamp coolers, rather than up at the spigot. I replaced the hard water filter, drained both coolers to get rid of the mineral build up, and oiled the bearings.

By the time I was done it was 2:00pm and I was feeling pretty low...

Not much else going on in the afternoon and evening. I did various minor  household chores.
