Saturday 24 July 2010
Saturday - down sick. Not sure why - my bad tooth was aching on Thursday and Friday, on Saturday I had a pretty bad sore throat as well - so maybe a bit of a summer cold or something.

I missed what sounded like a really nice pool party at a friends place, darn.

Friday 23 July 2010
Friday - I spent the morning working on the boats' diesel engine. Last time I tried to go sailing there was no water through it, and I've been busy, but had the energy and time in the morning.

First I checked the line to impeller - clear, water flowed in a good stream through the inlet hose when I pulled it off the impeller and opened the salt water seacock. Then I pulled the impeller off, checking the condition of the impeller belt as I did so (good). Opening up the impeller housing showed the blades to be fine, in good order, and everything turning as it needed to. I put it back, hooked up the lines (and why couldn't Yanmar have designed it so that one could replace the impeller without having to disconnect the belt and housing?). Then I pulled off the exhaust elbow and checked that - a good flow of water. So I started the motor with the outlet hose directed into the bilge and got a good stream of water. So then I checked from the lift canister on out to the hull fitting - no obstructions. So, after buttoning everything up & four hours of labor, I started the motor.

No problems, plenty of water in the exhaust.

What the hell was wrong? I didn't do anything to fix stuff. Perhaps a bit of scale in the engine, perhaps the intake was covered with barnacles or something, that came off. I don't know, and it means I will constantly be looking to see if everything is OK, every time I go out.

Sunday 18 July_2010

Sunday - I knew there was something "off" with the blog, and finally realized that I was an entire week behind. A week! Sheesh. So, short shrift here, gotta get back to (semi-) real time!

I "watched" a friends house for them over the weekend, stopping by and making sure the mail was picked up and the cats OK. In a couple of short days I managed to (1) leave the a/c running, (2) overflow the pool by leaving the fill faucet on, and (3) leaving the front door unlocked. Sheesh.

Book #50 was Tam Lin, by Pamela Dean. This was an interesting and well written story about a young girls first years in college - she's an English major - and her eventual run-in with a fairy queen. To be honest the final supernatural part was the weakest part of the story, But the character exposition and asides on the rivalry between the English and other departments was great, the atmosphere wonderful.
