Saturday 29 July 2017
Saturday - Hot.

Did the 5 mile walk. It was 85F at 8:30am when I started, and about 95F at 10am when I returned.  But it was a pretty dry heat and 1.5 liters of water was enough...

An old friend called just before I reached the turn around point, she said both of her swamp coolers had failed for some reason.  So I went over and checked on things since the repairmen couldn't make it until Monday.  One just had a bad pump, which we replaced, and the other had the belt fallen off, because the pulleys weren't aligned.  I re-aligned them, and put a new pump in it as well, since it was apparently identical to the one that had just failed. Also oiled the bearings and told her landlord that there were gaps in the pads that needed filling.

Using an old thermometer that I inherited from Dad at 3pm I measured 97F air temperature outside in the shade at the swamp cooler at my house, and 72F at the outlet inside, so 25F as the delta, not bad. Humidity was about 10% officially, probably a bit higher here in town.

Book #30 was Exoplanets, by Michael Summers and James Trefil.  An interesting look into what is going on in exoplanet detection these days.

Friday 28 July 2017
Friday - Hot.

Thursday 27 July 2017
Thursday - Hot.

Wednesday 26 July 2017

Wednesday - Hot.

Did my standard 5 mile 'maintenance hike'.  I've been a slacker all July, and need to get back into things.  But I have to get out early, because by noon it's 100F+.  The new boots are OK, I don't seem to have the damp feet I was experiencing before, and the stiffer boots means my foot muscles and tendons aren't as sore.  I might get some better insoles though.

Tuesday 25 July 2017
Tuesday - Hot.

Started off to take a walk, about 9am, and turned around after a block.  It was that hot...

Talked a bit to S about the Tehachapi place.  She's remodeled a couple of derelict homes, but like me is kind of conflicted about this one.

I sent her a link to a 50yo home in Lancaster, 800SF, listed right now for $200k. Saw the sign while I was walking about.

Monday 24 July 2017
Monday - Hot.

Last week would have been Dad's birthday. I would have been up in Martinez, working on the house and yard no doubt. If only.

Sunday 23 July 2017
Sunday - Hot. 102F when we left for Tehachapi.

The property was interesting.  It has a well, pump, tank on the hill, but untested and un-permitted.  There is a relatively new septic tank, so that might be permitted.  I'm not sure if you have to permit stuff like that or it it's 'grandfathered' in. There is a smallish solar system, sans batteries, near the well. The roads and gates look OK, and it was fenced at one time, so the property line is clear.

The view is tremendous.

The house is a total wreck unfortunately. Probably not worth fixing up. So, it's way overpriced, even if the well and septic are good...

The Explorer smelled a bit overheated when we arrived.  Water and oil and gauges all seemed OK, it might be that the grade caused a bit of oil leak onto the muffler or hot engine, but it's a bit concerning...

We got gas and slushies and I took everybody home, then crashed.  Very tired.
