Saturday 15  December  2018
Saturday - Cool in the morning.

It's been down near freezing every morning.  I set up a small canvas tarp in the garage as sort of a tent, and put the dog kennels under it at night, with a 60W bulb under a metal pail.  This keeps it a pleasant 55F for the dogs.  Pail is warm to the touch, but not hot.

Garage itself sank to about 42F (on a night where it hit 32F outside) mainly because there is no weatherstripping on the roll up door or the back door.  Another project I need to get to.

There a a couple of comets in the night sky, but it's been hazy or overcast almost every night. Also the ski bib that I used to keep warm in the quite literally freezing nights in has oddly shrunk...just around the middle :-(

Book #44 was New Frontiers (Expansion War Trilogy #1), by Joshua Dalzelle.  This is really the fourth in the series, but since the evil aliens are different evil aliens than in the first three books, I guess it gets to be a new trilogy.

It's OK stuff.  Escapism reading.

I do get a bit taken aback at some of the space navigation stuff.  For example, Dalzelle refers to a cargo ship with 25g acceleration as 'low thrust' and that vessel using it needing a couple of orbits to break away from a planet. Silly stuff, really, any steady thrust of more than 1g means that the gravitational wells of rocky planets are negligible, and that "orbits" between them are really straight lines.  People have know this for decades, but I guess authors are generally not technical types (not everyone can be Heinlein or Pournelle) and talk of gravity assists and turns sounds cool.

Friday 14 December 2018
Friday - Rather cool for Channel Islands harbor.  I actually had to put a blanket on, inside the boat overnight!

By morning there was enough charge to run the bilge pump.  Well, one of them, the other didn't activate when I pressed the test button.  But it was nearly noon by the time I realized this, and I had to head home to the AV.   I need to go down and do some serious electrical system maintenance one of these days. Really all the wiring should be replaced at over 30 years of age.

Home in the early afternoon.

Cats and Dogs are all fine, my neighbor watched them while I was on the road! Filled a hole near the fence with 2" gravel, one of the dogs is quite the digger, but is dissuaded by the rock.

Thursday 13 December 2018
Thursday - OTR. Overcast in the AV, nice in LA.

S came by and dropped off the Chihauhau's, then I took her down to UCLA in her car and dropped her off, from there she takes the shuttle to LAX, and then up to San Jose for the weekend.  I took her car to Camarillo, and straightened some things out with the credit union there.  Then I went to Ojai and dropped off some stuff for Don.  Then I picked up a ham in Oxnard, and went down to the boat, arriving about 6pm.

The batteries were dead, as I suspected they would be.  I need a new battery charger on the boat.  I had a little charger/maintainer, so I put that on.

Wednesday 12 December 2018

Wednesday - Decent weather.  Cold in the mornings.

Still kind of wiped by yesterdays trip to the dentist. The pain isn't much, the orthodontist was good, but mentally it's a strain.

the Kaiser doc called in the afternoon, blood work was fine, for a man my age...

Tuesday 11 December 2018
Tuesday - Nice weather.

Off to the dentist for a root canal mid morning.  It was about 3 hours in the chair.  Then home and pretty useless for the rest of the day.

Monday 10 December 2018
Monday - Reasonable weather.

Lots of cleaning and such, since it'll be a busy week for me.

Sunday 9 December 2018
Sunday - A typical winters day for the AV.

Shopping in the morning, S had a bunch of Xmas stocking stuffers to get, and I hadn't shopped last weekend, so it took a while. The stocking stuffers were for a charitable cause, so I kicked in $60 towards them as well.

I had plans to do stuff in the afternoon, but basically just napped and took it easy, pretty tired again.

Book #43 was Counterstrike (Black Fleet Trilogy #3), by Joshua Dalzelle.
