Saturday 7 December  2019

Saturday - Light rain.

My brother texted to say that he finally saw the sun in Reno, for the first time in two weeks.

Book #41 would be Some Golden Harbor (RCN #5), by David Drake.

I kind of doubt I'll read 50 books this year.

Friday 6 December  2019

Friday - Typical winter weather.

S texted that she is going to be a big speaker at the CSHA meeting next year.  It took them a long time to review her proposed talk, apparently they had a lot more submissions than usual.

Thursday 5 December 2019

Thursday - The pellet stove is working well - the chimney sweep is due next week. One of the propane heaters is acting up, though it seems better in the last couple of days. It's interesting to note that you can't buy a propane heater locally: HD and Lowes have big displays of heaters, but they are all electric heaters gussied up to look like other things.  I guess California law makes it hard. But the electric service is becoming more unreliable by the year, it seems unwise to depend on something like that.

I should be Xmas shopping, but I'm still kind of wiped out.

Wednesday 4 December 2019

Wednesday - Reading up a bit on SwiftUI.  It sounds like a little easier way to make an app than Objective-C and UIkit.  Dunno.  So much hype and nonsense, it's hard to get excited about anything Apple does these day.

I still haven't installed Catalina on the MacBook.  Even though Apple says it should work, I have my doubts.  I'm not sure the old laptop is up to it, the SSD and extra RAM made it pretty spiffy for a 7 year old machine, but Catalina is apparently a huge update to OSX.

I should make a backup disk before I try I guess. Or buy a newer Mac Mini, even the lower end ones are 2X the performance of the laptop. But it's probably $1500 to get one properly fitted out. If I get another bootable SSD for $100 I should be able to clone the existing install, and simply revert back to Mojave if things go bad.

Tuesday 3 December  2019

Tuesday - Apparently I was given a check, some time ago, to give to someone else. I have no memory of this, whatsoever.  Weird.  Anyway, I let everybody know that the mystery check wasn't in my wallet, trashcan, Explorer or Ram.

Maybe the cats ate it, I dunno. Usually I have a glimmer of recollection after being reminded of something, but I'm drawing a perfect blank on this.  If it was just my own business it'd be one thing, but someone else's money is something else.

Monday 2 December 2019

Monday - Light rain. Meh.

Sunday 1 December 2019

Sunday - A bit of shopping in the morning.

Tried a couple of other options to get the photo's, non-mangled, off the iPhone, no luck.  What a pain in the a**.  I usually do my backup at the end of the month, and am also doing the end of the year backups, so I want to get it done soon.
