Saturday 13 February  2016
Saturday - Back in Lancaster, but feeling kind of wiped out.

I did start the remaining sawing and cutting the wood for the utility trailer, and did some dis-assembly for prep and priming.

Lunch with friends, then a quick trip by the library and to Harbor Freight and Lowe's to look for some trailer fittings.

Later went over to R&S's for dinner and movies. They had 'Raiders' on VHS and, though we were actually able to get it to display on the HD screen, it was too pixelated and had very strange and nausea inducing distortions when we tried to watch it. After searching we found a DVD of the same thing and enjoyed that, and in particular, enjoyed the 'making of' stuff.

Friday 12 February 2016
Friday - OTR. Still warm in Oxnard. I spent some time cleaning the boat in the morning, and a gentleman (George) who had made an inquiry about the boat came by and I showed it to him. Even with a huge discount it was more than he really wanted to pay, but it made me realized just how much work the boat needs.

We also went by his boat, a 65' steel hulled cutter, and I have to say: I'm glad I have a small boat.... It was very cool, but would be so much work to maintain, let alone improve...

George had noticed that the lines on the Marie Virginia were wearing through, and that the fitting they were tied too on the foredeck was loose, so I replaced the lines and the 1.25" screws for the fitting with 3" screws. It had some sort of tang down into the pulpit, but the pulpit wood didn't seem very good. It never occurred to me that it might fail if not varnished regularly.

I need some line snubbers too, but didn't want to pay West Marine's $40 each price.

I also did a test fit on the new sail cover. It's a bit too baggy, about a foot at the mast and three to four inches at the topping lift, so we'll have to redo that.

I turned off the battery charger, and the batteries were still bubbling. So I disconnected every line, and they were still bubbling. I guess they are shot - they are about 10 years old since I bought them just after getting the boat in July of 2006.

So, we need:
  1. sail cover
  2. tiller cover
  3. hatch covers
  4. new Bimini fabric
  5. two new batteries
  6. bright work everywhere
  7. three new pieces of running rigging
  8. salt water plumbing replace/repair
  9. fresh water plumbing replace repair
  10. propane lines and tank
  11. head fittings and seals replace/repair
  12. bottom job
  13. diesel fuel replacement?
  14. pulpit repair/replace
  15. wind vane
Some of these issues you just throw money at, others take time and elbow grease.

By the time I finished what I could do it was pretty late, so I was on the freeway about 8pm. Traffic, despite it being a holiday weekend, wasn't bad. Though I was expecting it to let up after passing through Santa Clarita, and it never did.

I pretty much filled the back of the Explorer with stuff. I've been using the boat as an apartment, and stuff has just collected there.

Thursday 11 February 2016
Thursday - OTR. Finished up checking things in the field, then went in to the office and started on the drawing markups. There was a bit of confusion about what the Engineer actually wanted, but he showed up and we discussed it at length.

Down to the boat again, and decided to stay the night since I was pretty beat by then.

There was dew on the boat already (unlike Wednesday night) and I actually needed the sleeping bag rather than just a blanket.

Wednesday 10 February 2016

Wednesday - OTR. Down in Ventura (Saticoy), checking the punchlist items and some work that the Contractor was to do. It is, naturally, about 90F out in the field.

In the afternoon I went by the office and talked to Tim about various work related things.

Got down to the boat after dark. Batteries dead again....

Monday  8 February 2016
Monday - I spent most of the morning vacuuming. It's been a while, I can't get a belt that fits the old Hoover and was reluctant to buy another. However the increasingly dirty carpet force my hand and I bought a very inexpensive Bissell at Walmart. It had good-ish reviews on Amazon, and only weighed 14lbs, so I thought I'd try it.

It worked well enough, and the light weight made it easy on my lower back. The biggest drawback was the tiny, approximately 1 quart, canister - lots of emptying required. On the other hand there was so much cat hair that I had to stop often just to clean the filters, so no big deal.

S stopped by briefly, with her laptop, and showed me the 'splash screen' for the app that she'd come up with. Pretty awesome stuff. I keep trying to get back into app programming, but wrapping up the R/R job has kept my increasingly creaky brain occupied.

Book #6 was Turn Coat (Dresden Files, Book 11). I'm actually missing a couple of books before this (9 and 10), but they are pretty stand alone. It was OK, much like the others.

Sunday  7 January 2016
Sunday - Superbowl Sunday.

I did some shopping in the morning, a few groceries. I did buy some extra rice, which I'll preserve for emergencies. Sort of 'prepping' I guess, though I am only mildly concerned about things, mostly the 'big one' happening here in California, rather than a Zombie Apocalypse.

Ten pounds of rice fits nicely into two 2.5L soda bottles. I have some oxygen absorbers that I've ordered.

I went over to my friends in Antelope Acres for the game. I brought some cakes and salsa. They are big Denver Bronco fans, and we were all a bit nervous about how well Denver would resist the Carolina Panther's assault.

As it turns out, the old adage about a 'good defense beats a good offense' was spot on. Denver and Peyton Manning won pretty convincingly.

The friends mentioned that the lot next to them was reduced in price, to a value more in line with what it should have been. Hmmmm.....
