Saturday 9 April  2016
Saturday - Light rain in Channel Islands harbor all morning, off and on.

The harbor seals have taken over the end of "B" dock, and are wrecking the already decrepit slips. They are also so noisy that I have to wear earplugs. If it's like this continually I'll request a change of slip.  But it's hard to move the boat when you can't start the engine!

The battery is not charging, nor is it running the lights, weird. I'll have to get my multimeter out and check things. I thought I heard a little "pop" when installing, but don't see any blow fuses, but the wiring layout is a huge mess.

I replaced one of the halyards, but the attach string pulled through on the other, and now I've an empty sheave up there. Not a big deal, with roller furling I don't need one for the jib, but one of these days I'll have to lower the mast and redo things. The wind fly is gone too.

I also replaced the after mooring lines, and bought and wrapped a tarp around the mainsail. My friend shoulders mean that the uncompleted sail cover is going to stay that way for a while. I should learn to sew I guess.

After I'd done that I wondered why I just didn't take the sail off for now? It needs cleaning anyway.

Then there was a bunch of cleaning and getting my tools and belongings in order.

In the early afternoon I headed home.

RIP Riley, 1998-2016.

Riley has passed away, my cat friend of almost two decades.

I was on travel for work but had friends checking in on him every day. Friday he was sunning himself in the upstairs bedroom, they reported.

When I arrived home today he was laying quietly near the sunny spot downstairs. It looks like he just laid down and didn't get up.

We all have to go sometime but I'll miss the little guy, crotchety and perverse as he was, right up to the end.

He'd had a nice long life, but had recently lost 1/3 his body weight and was weak, kidney failure.

I dug a little grave and buried him this afternoon in a favorite blanket and some of his toys. I guess I'll build a little flower bed there.

May he find the great beyond to be a field of fat slow mice, inattentive birds and warm laps.

My brother sent me this:

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

How I hope so.

Friday 8 April 2016
Friday - OTR. Went into the office and did a few more things. Talked at length with the boss about the upcoming work. He'll make sure to be there every morning he said, to be sure that the contractor is on the right track.

I researched batteries, but discovered my best choices were not available locally. So I settled for exchanging the old cores for the some Group 27 batteries from West Marine. Surprisingly they were just a couple dollars more than Interstate or Diehard. I wonder who actually makes them.

I installed one, and it doesn't seem to work. Hmmm. Well, have to see if it charges overnight.

Thursday 7 April 2016
Thursday - OTR. Down to Ventura.

The draftsman couldn't make it, he had some medical stuff to do with his broken leg, but I printed out his as-built s and went over them, marking up the 11x17's for him. Minor stuff for the most part, though we need to do a field measurement on some stuff that was incorrectly place by the original surveyor.

It looks like the restart is on, the board approved the contract change order, so in a week or two I'll probably be out there inspecting again. It should be short, it's a 20 day contract, so I won't be on the road too much.

Tim and I took an hour or so to put flyers out in the neighborhood where the construction will restart, so the locals aren't too surprised.

I'll stay on the boat.

Wednesday 6 April 2016

Wednesday - Warm.

I didn't get down to Ventura, I'll head down tomorrow. Stuff to do here...

Tuesday 5 April 2016
Tuesday - Warm. Like 90F warm! I actually had to turn on the swamp cooler in the afternoon.

I mowed the front yard, finished painting and assembling the tailgate on the trailer. Still a few things to do, but it's 90% rehabilitated now.

Not much else to say, just working away on the app. Making progress.

I will probably head down to Ventura for some work related stuff tomorrow.

Monday 4 April  2016
Monday - Warm and sunny

Working on the app, getting the logic for the new levels started. Always takes longer and is harder than I realized.

Sunday 3 April  2016
Sunday - Warm and sunny.

A small amount of grocery shopping in the morning.

The afternoon I spent driving around Antelope Acres, looking at various land properties. My idea was to buy land, cheap, then build a house, cheap.

"No battle plan survives encounter with the enemy." - Helmuth von Moltke the Elder (paraphrased).

Lots are way overpriced. Those that aren't have serious downsides - too close to major roads or undesirable neighbors, or both.
