Saturday 1 July 2015
Saturday - Warm again.

Morning was devoted to various chores. I meant to mow the backyard, but it was too hot by the time I got around to it.

Lunch was at the Thai Cafe.

In the evening I went over to R&S's place, got a haircut, and tried to install the new version of the app on S's iPads. One was too old, an iPad 1 that was running iOS 5.1.1 and my compiler won't write for earlier than 6, and a newer iPad running iOS 8.1. On that machine I could provision and install, but the app which runs fine on iOS7.1 and 8.4 died after starting.

Sigh. One more thing to look into.

Friday 31 July 2015
Friday - Hot and humid.

It was a miserable hot and humid night, so I didn't sleep well and got up late.

I did a long walk in the morning, about 8.5 miles, and made a point of walking fast. And was fine, until about a half mile from home, when I started feeling ... off. My skin started to prickle, a very strange sensation. So I rested in the shade of a tree for a bit, and took a good 20 minutes to do that last half mile. Even so I averaged 3 miles per hour overall.

The it was a cold shower and a rest for a bit, and lunch.

Worked most of the rest of the day on the app.

I replaced static images of text with UILabels and the closest font (Helvetica Neue, go figure).

I also looked into accessing the iPad's SETTING-General app from our app, but that isn't officially supported. I thought, in iOS 8, that it was, but it turns out that you can only access the setting for your own app, but not the General settings. People have hacks, but they aren't supported or condoned by Apple. So the Language button, for now, just creates a pop-up to tell you to go to Settings.

I have no idea why Apple won't support a per-app localization, it'd be fairly easy - people's hacks show how it could be done, but that's Apple, kind of random.

Thursday 30 July 2015

Thursday - Warm again. And humid.

I worked on the app all day, though I had to knock off, shutdown and unplug the system from the wall about 3:30pm, when we began to get thunderstorms with lightning strikes fairly nearby.

But the Settings page is coming along. I made an effort to keep things simple and objectified, and the source code for that view is still under 300 lines of code, which is nice.

There were some emails from my brother, the old Grandview house waterline has sprung a big leak, so (since the city was threatening to turn off the water) he's contracted a plumber to fix it. It's ancient galvanized iron, the same line that gave so much trouble back when I was remodeling the house. The plumber said the whole line needs replacing, and I agree, and it's going to cost thousands of dollars, because the house is on a hill, and they'll have to pothole down about 8 feet, then over and out to the sidewalk.

He also wants to reline the sewer, which again I think I mentioned as an issue, some years ago...

We've been setting money aside, each month, into a repair fund, so there are monies available, but it'll really deplete it.

Wednesday 29 July 2015

Wednesday - Warm.

I did some shopping in the morning, I'd let things decline in anticipation of being gone, but it looks like work won't start, at the earliest, for another three weeks or so. Ah well.

Worked on the app.

One of the things we discarded, but decided to bring back, was a little demonstration image on the Settings page in the app. So I had to generate some artwork for that, and then create overlays and logic to change things when people changed various settings on the page, to show what things would look like. It was similar, but not identical, to stuff I had in the old version.2 back in February.

Tuesday 28 July 2015
Tuesday - Working away on the app.

Cleaning up some logic, re-doing some artwork, fixing various things.

A thing I need to do is to create an instructions page (view). I can just use a text view, or get more elaborate with Documentation or QuickLook views. QL is attractive because it's basically an already created reader by Apple that your app can call up, so you just create a Word or PDF document, copy it into the app's resource folder, and point QL at it, no muss and no fuss. Supposedly.

Monday 27 July 2015
Monday - Warm.

Not much to say. I spent some time talking with S about the app, and then started making changes and updates. Since the inspection work has been delayed, again, it's time to knuckle down and get stuff done!

Sunday 26 July 2015
Sunday - Roger & I did our mt. Baden-Powell hike. We got started from Lancaster a bit late - I was having trouble with my hydration pack and finally just borrowed a spare from Roger, and got to the trail-head about 10:15.

It was a good day for a hike, beautiful in fact.

By 10:30 we were on the trail heading up. There were a lot of cars in the parking lot, and we met a lot of people coming down as we went up.

Since we were both out of shape it took us a while to get to the top, but when we did it was almost deserted, which was nice. We enjoyed the view, the mild zephyrs (really, normally it's blowing pretty hard up there, but it was very mild this time), took a few pictures, then headed down.

Back in Lancaster I dropped off Roger, then headed home for a long hot shower!
