Saturday 16  February  2019
Saturday - Sun, but cold and windy.

Somehow I pulled something in my leg, at the right hip, it's very painful to bend it. Bah.  I don't remember doing anything too stressful, but there were lots of little chores to do this week.

I went into town and picked up the parts at the USPS office on J-2.  Horrifically slow service.  I'd fire the lot of them and their manager, if I was their boss.

As for the parts: one was the side of a pack of cigarettes, the other the side of a small harmonica - all packed into a 24" by 24" x 8" box - no wonder they couldn't fit it into the mailbox.

Looking at the FreeCad developers site it looks like stock Ubuntu Linux is what most people use, so I'll install that.  Linux Mint is derived from that, but has some differences, and I just don't want to deal with extra weirdness's.  I found a blank USB drive and installed it already, once I get the new RAM and hard drive in I'll see how it goes.

My brother in Reno says it rained for a couple of days, which melted the snow, but snow is predicted again there tonight!

Friday 15 February 2019
Friday - Cold.  Glad the pellet stove is working!

S had been battles with Adobe Premiere CC.  She decided to try the subscription version.  Apparently it is horrible, they've broken and even removed some important bits for video making.  She's tearing her hair out, as are a number of people in the forums.  She's ready to go back to CS-5 if she can find the disks.

She did mention that as a library card holder I am entitled to do Lynda courses for free!  They have quite a bit of stuff for iOS it turns out.  Mostly Swift though.

The new parts for the Linux computer arrived, but for the first time every they didn't just leave them on the doorstop, but want me to come into town to pick them up.  Bah.

Thursday 14 February 2019
Thursday - Cold and very windy.  The pellet stove blew out, twice! It rained like crazy, about 3/4" from midnight until noon.

Wednesday 13 February 2019

Wednesday - Cold and overcast.  Rain now and then.

Tuesday  12 February 2019
Tuesday - Cold out.

Keeping busy with various indoors projects.  The windows 10 laptop is such a pain to deal with that I set up my old Linux Mint machine.  I had to battle with it to get it to do updates: apparently there was a bug in something so the "maintainer" removed the "install" button from Synaptic.  So I had a package manager that couldn't, you know, actually manage packages.  There was also a bad site in the repositories listing that caused the entire update process to halt.  Not just the packages that depended on that particular repository (the printer drivers) but all repositories!  This is the kind of stupidity that keeps me away from Linux.

I was surprised to see that it only had 4GB of RAM, I was positive it had 8 or more.  Oh well.  I ordered some, and a new hard drive, and it should arrive later in the week.  Trying to develop software on Windows is so horrible that it's worth a few bucks to do it on Linux.

Monday 11 February 2019
Monday - Cold, but cloudless blue skies.

My brother says he went around his place in Reno knocking icicles off his roof.

Working on some documents for Covered California.  In theory you can log into the website and drop them there, in practice it was down and I had to get S to FAX them, she being the only person I know that still has a landline and fax.

Talked a bit with Dr. Gupta.  He said he'd been in the hospital most of January, and was very happy to get out!

Sunday 10 February 2019
Sunday - Cool.

I did a bit of shopping in town with S.   I didn't actually get too much stuff. She gave me some goodies too, some nice gravy and some early Valentines Day gifts.  Yum!

I found a disemboweled chicken in my front side yard when I went out.  The neighbor across the street said he heard a commotion and came out and saw a coyote standing over it. The coyote took off, leaving the remnants.  When I returned from shopping I put it in a garbage bag - two of them actually - and put it in the trash.   I could have just dumped it in the field behind me, but didn't feel like tromping through mud with a dead chicken.

Hopefully it stays cold until Wednesday.

My friend C was coming back from the central valley and texted to see if the freeway was open through Tehachapi.  It was, though it was snowing, and her kids were apparently very pleased with the adventure of driving through snow.

AH cooked up the steaks from last week, and had a son bring a plate over here.  He is still coughing and possibly contagious, and didn't want to spread the disease to me.  The steak was excellent!
