Saturday 1  December  2018
Saturday - Cool, and a bit windy.

I was really tempted to paint the eaves, but I need to patch them again, as the rains seem to have washed away some of the patching.  Or maybe it was the pressure washing.  And in any case the winds were soon gusting to 30mph and I couldn't.

Instead I worked on the master bath. Because of various exterior work issues taking precedence, and falling off that ladder, nothing had been done since about June.  When a couple of friends came over at Thanksgiving I could see the horror in their eyes...

So I put the vanity top on top of the vanity base - which is really a re-purposed kitchen cabinet I think, just to check the fit (it's a bit small).  I cleaned the walls and tub (a big job) and patched the remaining damage with an initial coat of repair stuff.  I put real blinds in to replace the temporary blinds, and moved a lot of junk out to the garage.  This all took a day.

I need: plumbing fittings, a new mirror/vanity, a new vanity base, painting, some tile work, a new commode, a new exhaust fan, a new shower head, a new w/c overhead light and a new set of vanity lights, and so on.  The flooring is horrible, but I don't want to put too much money into all of this stuff right now - really, it all needs to be torn out and redone at some point.

A solid 8 hours of work.
Friday 30 November 2018
Friday - Reasonable winter weather, nothing special.

I had a brief dental appointment, where I was told (again) that I needed some root canals and crowns.  So I'll be going in for one of those in a couple of weeks.  Yay.

I went by to help S with some video work for a therapist video, but that didn't happen, for various reasons.

She and R had got me a Christmas present, a water filter, and gave it to me early.  After the master bath is put together, at least roughly, that will be my next task I think.

Christmas already?

Thursday 29 November 2018
Thursday - Cool and windy.  In the 40's for most of the day, and gusting into the 30mph range.  A nice change of pace and a nice purple/orange sunset with clouds and mist.

I wanted to work on the app, but there were computer issues to deal with.  My add-on video display adapter - or the Mac - is having issues.  At one point the machine was completely unresponsive, and the task monitor showed 106% utilization from the display adapter process alone...   I turned the machine off at that point, and restarted and tried a few things, but the dual monitor display just isn't working properly now.

I also had trouble with the server-less network daemon, again using vast amounts of memory and CPU.

I may try to install the new OSX again, since things are already messed up.  Supposedly it's a stability release, maybe things will be better. When I tried a while back it hung and wouldn't install.

The new Mac Mini is out, and that might be an answer, if things remain bollixed up on the aged MacBook.  I'd rather not spend the money on it, if I can avoid it.

Watched some tevee, and a movie: Trekkies 2.  Amusing.  I didn't think it quite as good as the first.

I saw over at Slashdot that they've just discovered a huge ad-hijacking network.  Which explains the issues I've been having, but doesn't really excuse them.

But the ad people have only modest incentives to keep their systems secure - a few lost clicks here and there that they can't bill for isn't a huge bother, and the potentially vast damage to the people that get re-directed is invisible to them, they apparently have no real legal responsibility for consequences.

Wednesday 28 November 2018

Wednesday - Rain at last!

In the early am hours we finally had some light rain start. It lasted until early afternoon.  Officially we had about two tenths of an inch, I suspect that out west here we had a bit more, but that's certainly enough to wet things down!

No leaks, yay!

I finally, with S doing the heavy lifting and phone work, have an appointment with Kaiser.  I've been in sort of a limbo for a while, and it's high time I got my flu shot and a few other things.  It turned out to be a 'Covered California' issue for the most part, no surprise there.  Ah well.

Pretty tired in the evening, didn't do much.

Tuesday 27 November 2018
Tuesday - Cool in the morning, nice in the afternoon, with winds coming up.

I painted the trim and the siding with the Valspar primer.  I considered using the spray gun, but didn't want to experiment with it up on top of a roof.  Also I needed a brush to really get into the smaller crevices and cracks that I hadn't patched and caulked, and underneath and behind a few bits of trim.

This took about six hours, and by the time I was done the wind had come up, strong enough to start blowing paint off the brush.

It covered pretty well, better than I expected from the Valspar.  I thought I'd need another coat, but perhaps not. I did miss some caulk slop from the previous owner, but it's much better than it was.

I received a message from the marina - apparently the USPS mangled my slip fee envelope and check so badly that it is unusable, and they want me to send another...

I should check on the other stuff I mailed at the same time!

Monday 26 November 2018
Monday - Cool in the morning, nice in the afternoon, with winds late.

My big chore for the day was to prepare the chimney exterior for more paint.  We did a really quick job last year, just slapping primer on,  since rain was coming.  I really wanted to fill the cracks and holes in the trim that there wasn't time to address last year, and there was a lot of very sloppy caulking by the previous owner that looked terrible.

Rain is still coming - predictions are a front on Wednesday night - so I scraped, brushed, and sanded and washed and re-caulked things.  This took nearly six hours, and it was getting windy and cold by the time I was done.

Sunday 25 November 2018
Sunday - Cool in the morning - nice in the afternoon.  A bit windy too.

I did a fair amount of shopping in the morning.

I had plans to do stuff in the afternoon, but basically just napped and took it easy, pretty tired again.  It was a very long week.

I've been seeing a lot of ad-redirection lately on some internet sites I visit - and not flaky minor web pages, but major news and aggregation sites.  I tried disabling JavaScript, and that works to prevent the redirection.  Unfortunately it breaks so many web pages that it's as annoying as the redirection!  Bah.

One site actually had a post about it, claiming that it was the ad peoples fault (probably true), and that they weren't going to do anything about it themselves and they weren't going to accept comments about the issue.  Holy cow, talk about an entitled and indifferent "S U Reader Scum" attitude! Amusingly, no one could see the post unless they had JS turned off, because even the main page was being hijacked and redirected!!
