Saturday 6 June  2020

Saturday - Cool, into the 70's, but the winds were in the high 30mph range all day.

I fiddled around a bit in the back yard, laying out some of the planter box bricks and boards, just to see what different things look like.

I also did more work in  the office in the afternoon, since the temperatures were decent. It feels wrong to be "working" on a Saturday, but it's not like there is anything else to do, and I pretty much blew off a couple of days during the week from tiredness and tooth stuff.

While sitting in the office I heard a "snap" and it suddenly got lighter: the wind had blown the southwest-facing window screens right off.  I was lucky to be present, and was able to go out and retrieve it before it blew all the way to Rosamond!

Friday 5 June  2020

Friday - Cooler, the temperatures dropping quickly about 6am to 60F.  It never got over 70 for the rest of the day...but the winds hit about 45mph.  Impossible to work outside.

Did some work in the office.  Feeling a bit better, maybe the AB's are finally kicking in.

Also found the tube of Ambesol, and that helps. I need to pick up some more at the store one of these days.

Thursday 4 June 2020

Thursday - Hot again. Flirting with 100F, but the humidity was in the teens and the house stayed cool.

Glen came by about 9am and we unloaded the rest of the blocks, then picked up a bunch of debris, and moved stuff out of the RV shed and into the old Connex box.

By 11am it was about 90F and we knocked off, I was beat.

Didn't do much for the rest of the day - the heat really trashed me, and to be honest I had a bad night and didn't sleep well. The jaw hurt and I had to run the ac all night because of the heat. It was still 80F out in the morning.

Wednesday 3 June 2020

Wednesday - Hot, about 102F on the porch.

I'd put out the trash and greenwaste in the morning, then had to go into town to mail something and drop off some irrigation line with S. I also went by California Quarry in town, just to see what they had.  Unlike Jaqui & Sons down the street they just do gravel and rock and sand, no block or anything else.  But a decent selection and decent prices, though delivery out to AA is another $20 a truck.

On return the trash guy was just arriving.  I talked to him about the greenwaste: usually he picks it up, but now there is a separate truck again, and he hadn't come by.  I asked if I should call it in since I'm paying for it, and he said I could.  But about 20 minutes later, before I had, the greenwaste guy came by and took it.  I'm guessing the regular trash guy got him on the radio and let him know that it wouldn't go well if his supervisor heard about this. All is well that ends well.

I wasn't going to do any yard work - I did a lot yesterday, but I saw some wall cap blocks on Craigslist while searching for cheap pavers, and it occurred to me that they might make reasonable pavers in the back yard.  Since 100SF is about $600 for retail "Pavestone" and the like, new, perhaps $350 out the door for the cheap concrete pavers;  and this guy wanted $150 for 220 blocks (about 150SF), it seemed like a good deal. And it the seller was right here in Antelope Acres, about a block away.

And if it looks terrible I can always just use them somewhere else.  I'll have to rent a saw, since there are no short or half blocks.

So I called up Glen and we went and got them in the 100 degree heat.  It took two loads, I didn't want to overload the half ton, and we only unloaded the first load, tomorrow we'll get the rest.

Then I crashed for the rest of the day.

Jaw still aches.

A brilliant silvery waxing moon in the evening, when I walked down to get my mail.

Tuesday 2 June  2020

Tuesday - Heating up.

Glen came by and we put about three hours in.

In the afternoon I went into town and the dentist said what I knew, jaw infection, probably at the broken tooth down there, come back and see the specialist in a couple of weeks.  At least I got a prescription for AB's out of it.

The pharmacy and the lot in front of Von's was jammed, everyone was trying to beat the 6pm curfew the county has imposed because of the rioting.

Monday 1 June 2020

Monday -Warm, but not crazy.

I checked the voltage on the Explorer battery: 11 volts, I've lost a cell.  The battery is only about 14 months old, installed last February.

Glen came by and we cleaned more in the yard and storage containers. We hauled a load of green waste over to his house bin again, after unloading the planks and blocks from the truck.

It was hot and we quit at noon.

My jaw has been hurting more and more, so I finally called the dentist, and have an appointment for tomorrow afternoon.

Sunday 31 May 2020

Sunday - Warm again, maybe 90 in the afternoon, moderately windy

I  went shopping in the morning for groceries, with S. Winco was utterly dead: either the EBT cards were filled and everyone shopped on Friday, or they won't be filled until tomorrow.  Good for us though, in and out in a few minutes.

Afterwards we went to Lowe's next door and I picked up some pressure treated lumber and landscape blocks, and some poisons and sprayers. I'm going to call those June expenses, btw, since I really broke the budget for yard work in May...

Aaron has loaned me a battery charger, and I made an effort to charge the Explorer yesterday, without success, but it was only about an hour so perhaps not enough.  I'll try again tomorrow.

After getting home I did a few chores, laundry and some cleanup in the container, deep watering of the trees. I am down to deep watering twice a week now, that being about 5 gallons of water.

Book #23 was Space Vikings Throne, by John Carr & Mike Robertson.  this is the sequel to last weeks book, and the 'voice' is eerily reminiscent of H. Beam Piper. Unfortunately, this "trilogy" has no third book either, it being published in 2012...WTH?
