Saturday 22 May 2021

Saturday -

Friday 21 May 2021

Friday - Cool overnight, somewhat overcast  and windy in the am.

Thursday 20 May 2021

Thursday - Warm and a bit windy. Another high wind day, with gusts officially to 52mph at Fox Field.  I suspect they were higher out here.

It looks like the trees did OK. I'm glad we added the guy lines yesterday, it was really crazy out there.

I watered them a bit in the morning, and again in late afternoon, since the humidity was in the single digits.

It wasn't really warm, but with the low humidity my sinuses were killing me again, so I ran the swamp cooler a few times.

Other than some yard clean-up chores I just worked on app related stuff, going through some Swift and Cocoa tutorials, as much to figure out how to use auto-layout and Xcode's new features as to learn Swift proper.

This is a Packt book, and decidedly low end compared to, say, Neuberg, but sometimes that all you want - and sometimes their one line descriptions of something is just what you need!

Wednesday 19 May 2021

Wednesday - Warm and windy.

The gentleman from Evergreen nursery showed up early, and we set to work planting the tree's.  I'd actually not dug a hole for the ash, but on consulting we put it where it should shade the MRB roof in late summer.

The holes that I'd started, and filled with water, were dug very quickly.  Those in dry earth took a bit longer.

We added some amendments, and made watering rings around them, and gave them a good drink to start with.

Then some guy wires, using some cord I had and some old hose I got from Sheryl yesterday.  The current fad is not to guy tree's, as the motion when they sway strengthens them, but most aren't directly exposed to 50mph+ gusts on planting...

Anyway, done by noon!

I was pretty beat after this, didn't do anything useful for the rest of the day.

Because of the lack of moisture in the air my sinuses were killing me for most of the day.

Bob texted that he had a chance to use the Zoom lens I bought him for his belated birthday present, mostly on the moon.  Said he really preferred it to swapping out individual lenses in the cold and dark and wind.

He mentioned that he did have to re-balance the scope because of it's weight.

Tuesday 18 May  2021

Tuesday - Hot and dry again.

I made sure to go out and water the tomato seedlings twice a day for now - they are still new.  Unfortunately I can see some powdery mildew, so I drenched them with oil for that.  Hopefully everyone will pull through. I'll cut back to once a day watering at the end of the week.

I dug out the tree holes a bit more, and filled them with water again.

Man, my hands just ached afterwards, despite not a lot of work.

The guys from Absolute Flooring sent their measuring gal out, so that's done.  She said it'd take a day or two to calculate stuff, then they'd call me.

Since I haven't selected a flooring type they can't really give me an estimate yet.

Amusing factoid: when we were in there last week I asked why they didn't just look up the old estimate from a year or so ago, and they said they didn't use computers!

I need to get my other estimates going as well, though I don't see anything happening quite yet.

S suggested that Memorial Day might have some serious savings on flooring materials, so there's that...

Monday 17 May 2021

Monday - Hot and dry in the afternoon.

I went out and dug out a bit for the tree's.  Maybe a shovel deep, and then filled with water.  My hands aren't up to this kind of stuff any more. Glad I decided to pay the nursery to install the tree's.

The red Chinese claim to have landed on Mars, with a rover, but I've seen no confirmation of that, after nearly 48 hours.  Well, commies are secretive at the best of time, and if there is an issue we may not know for months.

Book #32 was The Element of Fire (Ile-Rien #1), by Martha Wells. This actually takes place a couple of hundred years earlier than the book of last week, think rapier's and matchlocks and sorcery, whereas the previous book was pistols with cartridges and gas lights and sorcery.  Again, well done.

Sunday 16 May 2021

Sunday - Shopping in the morning with S. I was actually late, having fallen asleep sitting on the couch with my coffee...

No harm done she said.

We went next door to Lowe's and I picked up a couple of small things.

I went out on Saturday night a took a gander at the conjunction.  It wasn't amazing, with the moon being several diameters from Mars, and Mars just being a bright dot right now, but it was nice to get out.

I just used the Fujinon 7x50 binoculars, which framed the Moon and Mars very nicely. The weight helped stabilize things.

I went behind the house, out of the direct 40mph winds, but my eyes were still dry and dusty after ten minutes or so.
