Saturday 9 January  2021

Saturday - Typical weather.

It was time to do laundry, so I did about four loads worth. And a bunch of house cleaning.  I even did a big refresh, ~20 gallons, of Mr. Turtle's tank.  He was as (un)grateful as always.

Book #3 was Repercussions (WTC #8), by Marion G. Harmon.

Since it's been a while (2011) I went back and read the first book in the series again.

Book #4 was Wearing The Cape (WTC #1), by Marion G. Harmon. Still pretty much the best in the series, IMHO.

I couldn't SSH into the site for a while, hence few updates, but that's been resolved and I guess I have to keep posting...

Friday 8 January  2021

Friday - A decent enough day.

Working on various things around the yard, the post and rail fence for the north side of the house, looks like the drop is around 10" or so from the sidewall at the house, about 60' or so.

Then a bit of work on some stuff in the house.

Not much in the way of computer work though.

I did order a couple of smallish external USB drives, 1TB, to use to make bootable backups of the two Macs. Given the trouble in backing up reliably it seems like the best and easiest one-step option.  Of course Apple has apparently f**ked that up for Big Sur, but that's a problem for another day, still running Catalina.  Not going to upgrade to that for a while.

Book #2 was Recursion (WTC #7), by Marion G. Harmon.

Thursday 7 January 2021

Thursday - Another typical day. Low in the high 20's, high around 60, high clouds here and there.

I talked a bit with TD, I was thinking of going down to Ventura today, but next week is better for me.

A couple of years ago someone (S) had given me a roll of 2 gallon plastic bags, perfect for policing the kitty litter every day. The roll was nearly empty, but there was a serial number inside of the cardboard tube that allowed me to figure out the make, and I'd ordered some, and they've arrived.

I'd bought a big pre-made Lasagna from Winco (Stoffer's) and cooked it for dinner, and a lot of bagged leftovers to freeze up. It tasted pretty good. But two hours of using the propane stove kind of makes me cringe...

Book #1 was Team-Ups and Crossovers (WTC #6), by Marion G. Harmon.  I didn't like it as much as the earlier books, for various reasons, but it was still entertaining light reading.

Wednesday 6 January 2021

Wednesday - Typical winter weather, high clouds

There was a dental appointment in the morning, just a cleaning and checkup, but the dentist also ground down the new molar a bit - I've been having some pain in the upper left and though it isn't terrible it's a puzzle: there is no crack in the tooth base (there's a crown) and there isn't any especially terrible gum issue.  He suspects that I've been grinding my teeth at night. Just a couple of hours in the chair.

Interestingly I heard one of the dental staff discussing get the Covid-19 vaccine: her husband has been offered it at his work, some sort of medical place, and was dithering about whether to take it.  I guess his wife is in the YES camp, he tends towards NO, and it got to be a pretty heated discussion...

I picked up a few things at Lowe's since I was in town, but not a lot. Wiped out when I got home.

So, not much Swift.

Tuesday 5 January  2021

Tuesday - Typical early winter weather. The winds have let up the last day or two, which is nice.

I did some more cleanup, and some bills.  It's nice having the one credit card paid off, and the other mostly paid off. But property taxes are due, and I should start my taxes.

There was an odd email from US Bank that "millions of stimulus checks have been mis-delivered", and that they are working on it.  I wondered why I hadn't gotten mine.

I got a message in the early evening that I have a dental appointment tomorrow - glad they reminded me.

There are a couple of (probably) pretty nice refractors for sale up on Craigslist in Carson City.  I let my brother and friend C know, but they aren't interested.  An 80mm F/13 on a nice equatorial mount for $65 is a steal, but I guess that's how it goes.

Monday 4 January 2021

Monday - It's OK, weather wise.  A normal winter day.

The pellet stove is hanging in there,  tho really I need to replace the auger.

I haven't really needed it the last few days, the house only drops to the low 60's overnight, since it's been so warm out (freezing and above).

The old pet warmer heating pad had died, and I ordered another a while back and it arrived.  It took the cats about four hours to discover and make use of it.

Sunday  3 January  2021

Sunday - A normal day I suppose.  Feeling a bit better.

No shopping.  I am well set.  S is down Ojai way helping her Dad with some medical stuff I guess.

I finally got around to installing the new wifi dongle on the Devuan box.  It works OK.  There was a bit of an issue where wicd had no adapter name shown, I had to use some linux-fu to get the actual adapter name - it is no longer just wla0 - and then it worked OK.

The Mint distro on the other partition saw the new device and configured it instantly, without any intervention from me, other than the wifi password.

So that's done.
