Saturday 11 September   2021

Saturday - It was actually coolish in the morning, 73F at 7am. Hot later though.

Did a bit of cleanup in the garage and back yard.  It is a little better than it was.

In the afternoon there was a cloud of smoke to the west, a new fire, the 'Route' fire.  Only a few hundred acres, but it closed the I-5.

I sent a warning to S to check the news and traffic before heading home tomorrow.  It is well north of her highway back, but these things can move miles overnight in the winds and gusts in place like the Tejon pass.

Did a little bit of app work, not much, still kind of dragging.

The 20th anniversary of 9/11.  Biden didn't dare show his face or make a speech, after the debacle in Afghanistan of the last few weeks.

Friday 10 September 2021

Friday - Still miserably hot, but also humid, with a monsoom from the east.

In the morning it still smelled like rain, but we never actually got any overnight - the dust on the old Explorer windshield was unmarked.

B says they actually got rain up in Carson City.

I didn't do much, too hot mostly, and still kind of tired from my exertions earlier in the week.  Every once in a while (daily) I am reminded that I am not a spring chicken anymore, and it takes longer to 'bounce back' from big exertions.

Book #47 was Ascendant (Genesis Fleet #2), by Jack Campbell.  Sequel to Book #46.

Thursday 9 September 2021

Thursday - Miserably hot again - and humid.

It smelled like rain, but we never actually got any. There was a bit of cloud-to-cloud lightning in the afternoon, which was kind of neat.  Fun to see clouds, though the humidity means running the expensive mechanical a/c.

I was going to go down to the boat and do some work there, but ALL the marina bathrooms are closed until further notice. So that's a no.

S is going to go down and spend the weekend with her dad though.

It's just too hot to do anything outside, or even in the garage.

Book #46 was Vanguard (Genesis Fleet #1), by Jack Campbell.  This is a prequel, set 200 years before the Lost Fleet series.  It was OK, nothing particularly new.

Wednesday 8 September 2021

Wednesday - Only 114F!!

I actually ran the swamp cooler on low and the mechanical a/c in the living room, because it was 77F in the house by noon, even with the swamp cooler on "high".  Ugh.

This particular heat wave is supposed to break, with somewhat cooler conditions starting tomorrow.

I didn't do much else, rather than the usual garden chores, it's too hot outside and I feel a bit tired.

Planned was work on the awning additions, but it's just too beastly hot - the tools, for example, were too hot to touch if left in the sun.

Mr. Turtle's water was changed, and his filter.

I worked on the app for a bit.

Did some on-line bill paying.

I went out for a bit of star gazing around 9-10:30pm but the conditions were terrible, we had clouds from the east and winds, late in the day, and though they started to clear out after dark it was still very hazy, the north star was invisible and the light dome from Lancaster to the SE was huge.

In theory there'd be a GRS transit around midnight, but it wasn't worth staying up in that kind of seeing.

Because of the wind, I went out to the old horse stall with the 3" scope.

It was kind of nice, sitting in the dark, wearing shorts and a t-shirt in 91F weather at 10pm.  You can't do that in winter, not if you want to live.

Tuesday 7 September  2021

Tuesday - Hot, about 115F at one point, though mostly around 110F.

I went up on the roof to oil the bearings, and discovered the belt was failing.  As in only a thread of material left.

I tried to go to the little hardware store here, but they weren't open until 9am.  I didn't want to wait that long to find out if they had my size, so I went into town and picked up 2 new belts at Lowe's, and some other miscellaneous hardware: some M6 stainless bolts for the scope, a piece of aluminum to add a reflex sight to the Svbony, some hard water pellets for the swamp cooler, etc.

Then I came back and did a couple more trips up and down the ladder fixing things.

I was completely beat when it was done, but things are much cooler and quieter.

Monday 6 September 2021

Monday -  Labor Day.

Warm and windy, it hit about 115F.

Also smazey all day..

I hear some noise from the swamp cooler: I forgot to oil the bearings last time I had it opened up, I'll try to get that done tomorrow before it gets too hot.

I did a bit of yard work, assembled the blocks in a ring about the last front yard tree.  I messed up and measured from the bark, rather than from the center of the tree, so my tree ring ended up with a 5" gap.   Sigh.  I already knew how to do it right, and just forgot.  Getting old isn't for the weak.

I put the new ADM adapter on the SP mount, and then the scope, and took everything out for a quick stargaze, but the conditions were awful.  All I can say is that it's no worse than the $100 3" scope.

But it's heavy, just barely transportable with the scope on the SP mount.

Sunday 5 September 2021

Sunday - Hot.

I went shopping with S in the morning, I was running low on things.

I picked up some more canned cat food again, since I messed up and bought a bunch of "Savory Shreds" rather than "pate" last week.  The cats have been giving that a mixed reception, some cans are tasty, some they won't touch.

It was so hot that I didn't get much done.
