Saturday 16 May  2020

Saturday - Hot and windy, still.  It's been stupidly windy all week. Gusts to 50mph sometimes.

Got a text from my brother M.  He went down to Santa Clarita to feed turtles at a pond.  Red-Eared Sliders he says.  Apparently they come to people like ducks will, for food...

I don't know why I'm surprised, my own turtle does the same every morning.

Friday 15 May  2020

Friday - Hot and windy. Swamp cooler is working well.

The Keurig died, 4th one.  I was joking aloud that "maybe it's the water" and then it occurred to me: maybe the coffee pods from 2012 aren't good for a machine? I know that the cocoa in particular turns into grit and syrup at the bottom of my cup.  I don't think that is the issue here - it's clearly the pump, and the mix doesn't go through that (I don't think).  Anyhow, I tossed it.

Thursday 14 May 2020

Thursday - Hot and windy.

I read an interesting post on transit times to Mars, to/from Earth.  It's a bit surprising how, in particular, the small effect that delta-v can have on travel times. And, at the wrong times, even 7500 ft/sec doesn't do you any good.

I used to own a small book, Thrust Into Space, by Max Hunter.  As I recall, at some delta-v the courses become almost straight, not curved.  But I can't recall if it was 20,000 ft/sec, or 100,000 ft/sec.  Definitely 5 or 6 figures.

Wednesday 13 May 2020

Wednesday - Hot and windy.

Book #20 is Prince of Tanith, by Terry Mancour.

This is a sequel to Book #19, Space Viking, written by another author decades later.  I suspect that the original authors (H. Beam Piper) writings are out of copyright  (he's been dead for a long time), so maybe anyone can write a sequel if they want.

In any case, it's actually quite well done, the tone and style is very similar.

Mancour has does a couple of these sequels, and there are a couple by at least one other author.

Tuesday 12 May  2020

Tuesday -Warm and windy.

In the afternoon I got a couple of calls from the Frontier tech.  He was at the office, repairing my  line.  As I suspected, it was them screwing up there, rather than their insinuated problem on my end.  And, in the evening, service was back. Yay,.

Monday 11 May 2020

Monday -Windy.

I've been making some wind screens out of some old sheathing that I got from S.  It's commercial stuff, about 10', so I can cut it into 2x pieces and it just fits under the top rail of the chain link garden enclosure.  I had a little bit of tan house paint left, so I used it to paint them before assembling them with zip ties to the fence.  When I had that done I found the wire ties...  I really need to go through and clean the garage up again.

I'd like to do some more house painting, but the winds are ludicrous.

Sunday 10 May 2020

Sunday - Warm again.

I didn't go shopping in the morning for groceries, stocked up last week.

Trying to take it easy, my hands and joints are giving out.

I found some baseball game recordings on the Internet Archive: listened to Game 1 of the 1949 World Series.  It was the Brooklyn Dodgers vs the New York Yankee's. Joe DiMaggio, Jackie Robinson, Yogi Berra, Roy Campanella..
